The houses looked great from the outside. On the inside they have seen better days. Whilst we didn’t expect luxury, it would have been nice to have proper hangers in each wardrobe, doors that close properly and most important kitchens that are properly equipped for the amount of people renting it. No colanders for draining pasta, nothing to wash salad in, no whisk, one small pot with a lid and then one huge one without a lid. No bowls and then oven door didn’t close properly. And this was after we combined what we could find in both the kitchens (main house and dependance). The power went out on a few occasions when pressing certain light switches in the bathroom. This was after 10pm and we could not reach anyone to find out how to switch the power back on. After a long hour of searching we found the correct fuse box.
The thing that made the holiday great was the pool! Great size, well maintained and a lot of fun.
The umbrellas have seen better days but the still offered enough shade. At the moment I would not recommend to stay there, unless you plan to eat out every day. The property is situated quite remote and all streets/path are private, so you are not allowed to even walk there. That means you have to use the car and the main road for everything. The surrounding villages offer amenities (shops, restaurants, markets).
Villa Sonia was perfect in every way, The buildings are beautiful, the grounds immaculate. The facilities inside are very modern, with plenty of everything to allow us to explore cooking with the local ingredients. We even tried out the pizza oven on our last night.
The layout of the buildings gives plenty of space for everyone to get together or, find their own pool of tranquility. This made it a joy to spend the week with friends and family (we had 6 adults, 3 teens and an 8 year old). The pictures on the website really do not do justice to what you will find when you arrive.
A big thank-you to Barbara & family who were perfect hosts, so welcoming and friendly, this made the checking in process after a long day of travel painless. They were always there to help with anything (we had a power cut the first night, and they arrived in minutes to fix).
We're already thinking about a return visit. The honesty bar wine cellar a surprise bonus!
One minor niggle - and nothing to do with the property, is that there is no gelateria in San Donato, however the one in Castellina is well worth the short drive.

Perfecte ligging midden in centrum, dichtbij de kabelbaal naar Hohsaas, kerk en Coop. Privé parking aan appartement. Mooi terras met tafels, stoelen en droogrek met mooi zicht. Lijkt vernieuwd (en geschilderd), ook keuken en badkamer. Proper en schoon en mooi gedecoreerd. Goede bedden en beddengoed! Ietwat lage plafonds. Geen diepvries aanwezig. Krappe doucheruimte. Eettafel is smal, maar uittrekbaar voor extra ruimte. Zetel/bank staat niet zo vast op de grond en biedt maar plaats voor 3 personen.
[English translation courtesy of Easy Reserve] Perfect location in the city center, close to the cable car to Hohsaas, the church, and Coop. Private parking is available at the apartment. Lovely terrace with tables, chairs, and a drying rack with a beautiful view. The kitchen and bathroom appear to have been renovated (and painted). Clean, tidy, and nicely decorated. Comfortable beds and linens! Slightly low ceilings. No freezer. The shower is cramped. The dining table is narrow, but extendable for extra space. The sofa/couch isn't firmly secured to the floor and only seats three people.
Wir sind eine stationäre Jugendhilfeeinrichtung und waren mit sieben Klient*innen im „Alten Schöpfwerk“. Positiv hervorzuheben ist die sehr freundliche und entgegenkommende Vermieterin sowie die ruhige Lage mit schöner Aussicht auf Kühe und Weiden.
Weniger zufrieden waren wir mit einigen Aspekten der Unterkunft: Es gab keine Schlüssel für Schlafzimmer oder Badezimmer, sondern lediglich Haustürschlüssel, was aus hygienischer und organisatorischer Sicht ungünstig ist. Zudem war die Hygiene durch die Vielzahl an Fliegen eine Herausforderung. Auch der Zustand von Matratzen, Decken und Kissen war problematisch, da deutliche gelbe Flecken vorhanden waren.
Insgesamt vergeben wir für das „Alte Schöpfwerk“ zwei Sterne. Für eine Ferienfreizeit mit Klient*innen würden wir die Unterkunft nicht erneut wählen, bedanken uns jedoch herzlich für die Gastfreundschaft.
Beautiful location and great accommodation. We were a big family of 8 adults, 6 children and 1 infant, and we easily fit in the rooms provided. Everything was great, everyone was very happy with it.
Do not expect a lot of nearby sightseeing, though. Most roads to and from the accommodation are quite narrow and winding. We mostly stayed in the house and by the pool, which also was very well managed. If you're planning to mostly stay in the house, it is perfect. Stia, which is located 5-10 minutes by car from the house, is a quiet little town that provides everything you need. It is also a nice place to spend some time.

One of the reasons why our guests choose this house for their holidays is to enjoy a real tuscan experience far from places crowed with tourists to rediscover the beauty of a slow relaxing life. They want to savor authentic moments like spend quality time with family or friends in a peaceful place at their complete disposal and connect with nature...
Winding (and narrow expecially in little villages) roads are a tipical feature of tuscan countryside...
And what about nearby shigtseeing?
The house is located in the heart of tuscan countryside despite being close to the main tuscan cities. It's midway between Florence and Arezzo both reachable by car in about one hour, while the other big cities like Siena, Chianti, Montepulciano, Pienza, Lucca, Pisa can equally be reached by car in about two hours... Not so far away, after all!
Then of course there's Casentino valley that has nothing less then most popular places...
To say nothing of the many local wineries that organize wine tasting and home cooking restaurants where to taste tipical food...
Very close to the house there are a lot of historical and cultural sites that worth to be visited... like for example the medieval "borgo" (village) of Stia where there is also the "Wood art Museum" known for "panno Casentino" a tipical woollens product in Casentino valley weared by Audrey Hepburn "Colazione da Tiffany”.
Porciano Castle with its museum and the Romena Castle and Ancient Roman Church where you find also a bar/restaurant and a green equipped area with tables where you can relax.
Poppi and Raggiolo two of the Most Beautiful Village in Italy. In Poppi you can visit the Castle where lived Dante Alighieri and that was the prototype of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
Or even the sacred Hermitage and ancient Monastery of Camaldoli and again La Verna Sanctuary a big and beautiful church bild on the rock and usually known like the place where St. Francis lived for some period of his life and received the stigmata.
If you like nature and hiking you can enjoy activities organized by environmental tour guides like walking, e-bike tours or horseback ridings to discover the medieval villages of Casentino valley and the Casentinesi Forests National Park (UNESCO world heritage). They also organize activities for kids like water trekking in Arno river, trekking with the donkey or to see fireflies...
Ein wirklich tolles Haus mit einer besonderen Atmosphäre, viel Platz für Mensch und Hund - wir können es nur empfehlen. Die Aussicht vom Garten über den Ort Verbania und den See ist phänomenal und wir haben uns dabei gut entspannen können. Wir haben nichts vermisst, vom Wasserkocher bis zur Waschmaschine ist alles vorhanden.
[English translation courtesy of Easy Reserve] A truly wonderful house with a special atmosphere, plenty of space for both people and dog – we highly recommend it. The view from the garden over the town of Verbania and the lake is phenomenal, and we were able to relax completely. We didn't lack anything; everything from a kettle to a washing machine is provided.
